    Buildings' surroundings, energy grids, and the urban context in general present new potential challenges but also novel opportunities for adequate habitat design, particularly in the context of climate change and urban heat island. As such, modern green building design cannot disregard larger scales relevant to settlements and communities.   Fossil fuel-based energy consumption is still dominant in the world today, and there is a consensus on the limited reserves of these energy resources. Therefore, there is a strong stimulation into clean energy technologies to narrow the gap between fossil fuels and renewables.
